Amorim a leading contender for AC Milan job

Ruben Amorim secured 24 victories and suffered 21 defeats across 63 matches during his tenure at Manchester United

Former Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has become a top candidate for the AC Milan managerial position.

The Portuguese tactician has been unemployed since being dismissed by United in January following a difficult 14-month spell at the helm.

Insiders close to the ex-Sporting boss had previously ruled out a return to Benfica, the club where he spent six years as a player and made 154 appearances, for the 41-year-old.

Although no formal agreement has been reached, discussions have taken place between Milan and Amorim's representatives, and he features prominently on their shortlist to succeed Massimiliano Allegri. Allegri was sacked in May after failing to secure Champions League qualification.

Milan held a nine-point lead over fifth place when they defeated rivals Inter in March, but they managed only three wins in their final 10 matches, collecting 10 points and ultimately finishing one point behind Como, who claimed the last Champions League spot on the final day.

USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino has also been linked to the vacancy, along with Oliver Glasner, who departed Crystal Palace after their Uefa Conference League final victory over Rayo Vallecano.

However, another former Manchester United boss previously mentioned in connection with the Milan job is no longer in contention.

Ralf Rangnick, who managed the Old Trafford club from 2021 to 2022 before taking over Austria, has signed a contract extension with the national team through 2028.

If Amorim were to take charge, he would face his former club during pre-season, as AC Milan are scheduled to play United in Wroclaw, Poland on 15 August, one week before the Premier League season kicks off.
