Marcus Rashford's potential departure from Manchester United is taking a new turn, according to the Manchester Evening News, with a permanent move to Barcelona appearing increasingly unlikely.
Discussions between the clubs have been ongoing for several months, but with Rashford's £26m release clause having expired, the likelihood of a straightforward deal has essentially disappeared.
Rashford, who spent the 2025/26 season on loan at the Camp Nou, had been keen to extend his stay in Catalonia, reports the Mirror.

However, Barcelona's recent £70m acquisition of Anthony Gordon has significantly reduced the chances of them pursuing another high-profile attacking addition.
While a new loan agreement has not been ruled out, the expiration of the release clause removes United's ability to rely on Barcelona to take Rashford - and his substantial £325,000-per-week wages - off their books.
As a result, United are expected to take a more aggressive approach in the transfer market.
Interest in Rashford remains strong, with Bayern Munich considering a move for the player, who could link up with England captain Harry Kane in Germany.
Meanwhile, several Premier League clubs are also monitoring the situation following his productive loan spell, which saw him register 14 goals and 14 assists in Spain.

With Tyrell Malacia also expected to leave and Shaw's well-documented injury issues, strengthening this position has become a key priority for United.
Newcastle's Lewis Hall is also believed to be under consideration, although Robinson is seen as the more cost-effective option, with reports suggesting Fulham could agree to a sale for around £28m.
Robinson is said to be open to a move to Old Trafford, though it remains uncertain whether Fulham will entertain offers, particularly with a new manager set to arrive following Marco Silva's recent departure.
