At least 11 people have lost their lives in a barrage of Russian strikes on Ukraine that ignited a major religious site in Kyiv, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Four individuals were killed in assaults on the Ukrainian capital, while five emergency workers died battling a blaze sparked by a strike on the northeastern city of Kharkiv, authorities reported.
The 11th-century Dormition Cathedral sustained significant damage in what Zelensky described as "one of the biggest Russian crimes against Christian culture today." Moscow denied striking the location.
In a separate incident, a Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian city of Tula resulted in three fatalities and three injuries, including a one-year-old child, local officials stated.
Drone and missile attacks set buildings and vehicles ablaze, leaving over 140,000 residents of Kyiv without power, Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed.
Most of Ukraine was under air raid alerts on Monday morning.
The Kyiv strikes, which hit multiple residential structures, left at least 23 people wounded. Zelensky reported a total of 53 injuries across Ukraine.
The Dormition Cathedral is part of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a collection of monastic structures recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A large hole was visible on one side of the church, with flames emerging from the partially destroyed roof.
Zelensky stated that Russia launched 70 missiles and 611 drones during the overnight assault, and the fire has since been extinguished.
French President Emmanuel Macron joined the Ukrainian leader in denouncing the attack.
"Nothing justifies this attack on our universal heritage," he posted on X.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas labeled the strikes on the cathedral and Ukrainian civilians as "war crimes."
These attacks occur ahead of a G7 summit of world leaders this week in France, where the conflict in Ukraine is on the agenda.
Zelensky emphasized that the meeting's response should be "decisive and meaningful: more pressure on the aggressor, more assistance to Ukraine with air defense, primarily with anti-ballistic missiles."
The Ukrainian leader earlier noted that he had spoken with US President Donald Trump about efforts to resolve the protracted war.
Russia claimed that a US-made Patriot air defense missile had struck the cathedral, possibly due to a malfunction. It offered no evidence to back this assertion.
Russia's military stated that its "massive strike" had targeted Ukrainian military installations.
This is not the first instance of the cathedral being hit during Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began in 2022.
In January, Russian attacks damaged several buildings within the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra complex, Ukraine's Ministry of Culture reported at the time.
During World War Two, the site was nearly completely destroyed, save for its southeastern tower, according to UNESCO's website.
The UN agency condemned the strike on "one of Ukraine's most significant spiritual and cultural landmarks."
"Damage to such institutions deprives communities of access to culture, education and shared spaces that are essential for recovery and social cohesion," it said in a statement.
