The World Cup group stage is beginning to take some shape as the opening round of matches continues.
There have been significant victories, tense draws, comebacks, late drama, and shocks—but what does it all signify in the new, expanded 48-team event?
After all, it is no longer only the top two teams that advance, as was the case in the previous 32-team World Cup format used from 1998 to 2022: finishing third can, but does not always, secure progression.
How the 2026 World Cup third-placed rankings operate
If you have followed recent European Championships—or if you recall the 24-team World Cups before 1998—then you will already be familiar with the concept, because it is essentially the same system but with double the number of teams.
In short, the third-placed teams from each of the 12 groups are compiled into a single league table. The eight best-performing sides move on to the knockout stage, while the remaining four are eliminated from the tournament.

What is the FIFA Team Conduct Score and how does it impact World Cup group stage?
If two third-placed sides are tied on points, they are separated by (in order, as needed):
Goal difference
Goals scored
Team conduct score (fair play rating, based on yellow and red cards)
Latest FIFA world ranking
(Technically, previous FIFA world rankings would be used if the tie remained unbroken, but that is extremely unlikely because no two teams in the current rankings have identical points.)

Just to clarify, there is no situation in which a team finishing fourth in a group can qualify for the knockout rounds.
This could lead to a scenario where a team in one group finishes with four points and is eliminated, while a team in another group advances with three points—as happened with Ukraine at Euro 2024. It may seem unfair, but those are the rules.
