WARNING, DISTRESSING CONTENT: World Cup fans were ploughed down in droves after a car accelerated into crowds celebrating Mexico's victory against the Czech Republic
At least 17 people have been run down by a car that ploughed into World Cup crowds leaving Mexico's victory match against the Czech Republic.
Seventeen individuals were injured when a motorist drove into the crowd celebrating their team's World Cup triumph. Horrifying footage begins with the car slowly navigating through the gathered fans, with one man sprawled on the bonnet.
He was then seen dismounting, while others started striking the vehicle and another hurled a drink at the rear windscreen. Moments later, the car abruptly sped up through the crowd, dispersing fans, before colliding with the kerb as the man filming exclaimed: "No way!".
Another video shows the vehicle's front end severely damaged. A group of fans then dashed towards the car to assault it and confront the driver, while a man lay still on the kerb with blood streaming from his head.
The terror unfolded on a main boulevard in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, last night (June 24), following Mexico's 3–0 victory over the Czech Republic, which secured qualification for the World Cup round of 32.
Authorities have confirmed that 17 people – both men and women – were injured and transported to local hospitals. At least one remains in a serious condition, as reported by NeedToKnow.
Moments after the pandemonium, the area was cordoned off to allow emergency crews to transport the injured and remove the wrecked vehicle.
Authorities also confirmed that the driver was apprehended at the scene by security personnel.
He was taken to hospital under police guard, and his legal status will be determined once his condition permits.
Alberto Rentería Santana, the General Secretary of Los Cabos, stated: "Coordination between security authorities is ongoing, and investigations into the incident are under way.
"At this moment, our priority is to care for, support and stand by those who have been affected."
