Ecuador have lodged a formal complaint with FIFA over treatment received in the build-up to their World Cup 2026 exit against Mexico, who could face England in the round of 16
Ecuador have filed an official complaint with FIFA regarding the treatment they endured in the lead-up to their World Cup elimination by Mexico, who could potentially meet England in the round of 16.
Video evidence has emerged showing La Tri's squad joining hands in prayer before their pivotal clash at the Estadio Azteca, after a late-night disruption by Mexican fans outside their team hotel in Mexico City. Fireworks were aimed at the building, with some accounts indicating they were fired from the hotel's roof, while Ecuador's players were spotted looking through curtains as the chaos stretched into the early hours.
Furthermore, manager Sebastian Beccacece disclosed during his press conference that Ecuador arrived at their accommodation three hours and 20 minutes behind schedule due to unexplained delays with their flight and transportation.

This meant they endured a nine-hour journey after leaving their Columbus training base in Ohio on Monday morning, which was hardly ideal preparation before taking on free-scoring Mexico.
In a statement, Ecuador said: "Regarding certain off-the-field actions that took place prior to the Round of 16 match, the Ecuadorian Football Federation informs that it has submitted a formal complaint to the organisers, as this conduct is far removed from the principles of fair play, equity, and unity that a FIFA World Cup should represent.", reports the Express .
"Therefore, the FEF respectfully calls upon the relevant authorities to pay closer attention to these incidents and to adopt the necessary measures to safeguard the integrity of our players, coaching staff, and supporters.
"We trust that these unsportsmanlike actions will not overshadow the football celebration that unites two brotherly nations, and that respect, healthy competition, and fair play-which give meaning to a World Cup - will prevail at all times. Ecuador will always respond to these unsportsmanlike actions on the field."
Beccacece said: "We go, we compete, and we play, no complaints or excuses. I am grateful. We might have tired features, but how could I be upset about being in a World Cup?".
The row is particularly worrying for England, who could end up taking on hosts Mexico in the round of 16 should they overcome DR Congo in the last 32.
Mexico are seasoned campaigners when it comes to competing at altitude, with the Azteca perched 2,200 metres above sea level. Meanwhile, air quality in Mexico City continues to be significantly poor despite recent improvements, presenting another hurdle England would have to overcome.
Mexico have managed nine World Cup fixtures at the Azteca Stadium without suffering defeat.
